Chantix®® is prescription medication used to help people stop smoking. It is manufactured by Pfizer Inc. and has been the subject of much speculation in recent months within the health community. The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) recently linked Chantix®® with serious mental side effects and is now requesting that Pfizer put warnings on the medication’s labels.

Among the side effects to be cited in the warnings are symptoms such as

  • Anxiety
  • Nervousness
  • Tension
  • Depression
  • Hallucinations
  • Loss of Consciousness

In severe cases,

  • Thoughts or Attempts of Suicide

Research has also found that the medication can cause current cases of psychiatric illnesses to get worse, or even cause old psychiatric episodes to reoccur. Pfizer has also been asked by the FDA to make these recent findings readily available and obvious to patients by placing it in the warnings and precautions section of the Chantix®® labeling. Click here for more information about the FDA’s Public Health Advisory.

According to recent research, from late 2005 until late 2007, 988 cases were reported of Chantix®-related adverse events in the United States alone.

Of these events, many involved severe health complications, including

  • Diabetes
  • Glucose Intolerance
  • Seizures
  • Cardiovascular Problems

Since there have been reports of loss of consciousness in patients who use Chantix®®, the Federal Aviation Administration has banned pilots and air traffic controllers from using the medication. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is also not certifying interstate truck drivers if they take Chantix®®.
